Joe Hahn, Assistant Professor of Decision Sciences, Pepperdine University

Dr. Hahn began his academic career at UT PGE, earning a BS in petroleum engineering in 1988.  He has since earned his MS in Civil Engineering, MBA, and PhD in Management Science and Information Systems, all from the University of Texas at Austin.

“The basic problem-solving skills I learned as a student in petroleum engineering at UT have continued to help me.  I continue to be amazed at how I've been able to apply the same basic principles in so many different areas, from environmental remediation, to workover and well planning, to offshore facility design, to commercial planning and budgeting, and now to my research in modeling decision making under uncertainty.”

Should I consider grad school?

Absolutely! Here are the top five reasons why:

  1. Graduate school prepares you to be a leader in the field.
  2. Graduate school involves working on fun, creative, open-ended problems.  The answer isn't in the back of the book!
  3. Graduate students get paid to go to school!
  4. Graduate school can be completed in a relatively short period of time.  Many people who experience it remember it as one of the best times of their lives.
  5. Graduate students can work in industry or academia after graduation - the choice is yours!

Undergraduate students who are considering a graduate program should apply for the Summer Research Internship Program, which gives students a taste of the graduate school experience.
